The San Joaquin Valley Lapidary Society is located in Bakersfield, California. We are a group of rock hounds dedicated to the sharing of knowledge about the lapidary arts. We meet weekly for workshops in lapidary, silversmith, and wire wrapping/beading. We were founded in 2005, and are incorporated as a 501 (c) 3. Part of our focus is education, and offer a program for area elementary school 4th and 6th graders that supplements their geology studies.

As I looked over the smaller pieces on the table it brought back memories of past field trips when Shep was with us. I knew where some of these rocks came from, and remembered the trips we took not so many years back. The Mojave desert trips came flooding back, and I pictured the last trip together. We joined the Sierra Pelona Club on a trip, and visited Brown Butte and Castle Butte in Mojave. I had never been there before. Shep held a piece of light chocolate colored jasper and I remember him saying, I think that is big enough to get something out of. It was a good trip, good memories, including the Mojave green rattle snake basking on the dirt road that caused our caravan to come to a halt. RIP Shep from those here at SJVLS who traveled the desert with you.
