About Us

The San Joaquin Valley Lapidary Society is located in Bakersfield, California. We are a group of rock hounds dedicated to the sharing of knowledge about the lapidary arts. We meet weekly for workshops in lapidary, silversmith, and wire wrapping/beading. We were founded in 2005, and are incorporated as a 501 (c) 3. Part of our focus is education, and offer a program for area elementary school 4th and 6th graders that supplements their geology studies.

June 6 Photo workshop

THEE DON'S WORKSHOP. Our June 6th meeting will be all about photographing jewelry. Gene Stirm will be giving a workshop with a complete set up for photographing small treasures. Those who were learning silver smith work with Don Reading should bring what they have made, or pieces that Don made and create a lasting photographic memory. Those who want to make a lasting memory of their lapidary/jewelry creations should also take advantage of this chance to learn the mechanics of photographing small 'stuff'.
The work shop will begin promptly at 9 am. You will need to bring your own camera. Everyone can take part in this if they choose.

Benitoite crystal, with neptunite and natrolite from the Clear
Creek area.
FIELD TRIP: There is a field trip scheduled for May 31 to the Clear Creek area, west of Coalinga. This area has been closed to rock hounding for a number of years and has recently been reopened. This is on BLM land and requires a visitor permit for each person going, and each vehicle. Each person must also agree to a release of liability by the government regarding the presence and hazard of asbestos. The finding of asbestos in the area of the Benitoite mines was the reason the area was closed. Benitoite was discovered in this area and takes its name from San Benito County.
Those going should go to recreation.gov and Clear Creek serpentine acec  to find the visitor permit forms, and asbestos release form. There is a $6 charge per person. Bernie Bentsen is the field trip leader.  This will be an all day trip. Contact Bernie at bentsenbab@gmail.com for more information and if you intend to go.
