About Us

The San Joaquin Valley Lapidary Society is located in Bakersfield, California. We are a group of rock hounds dedicated to the sharing of knowledge about the lapidary arts. We meet weekly for workshops in lapidary, silversmith, and wire wrapping/beading. We were founded in 2005, and are incorporated as a 501 (c) 3. Part of our focus is education, and offer a program for area elementary school 4th and 6th graders that supplements their geology studies.

CLUB UPDATES: It is with such a heavy heart that I write of the death of our kind and giving friend, teacher, master silver smith, and fellow rockhound, Don Reading. How much we miss him, and how hard it is to realize that he is gone.

He was to lead another trip to the Hooney claim on the weekend of May 10th, those who planned to go are still going and will honor his memory while there in one of his favorite places on earth.

The next regular meeting for our club will be May 16th, at 9:30am, there will be a brief business meeting, and a chance to review the results of our booth at Garden Fest. It was a good day, and even thou I was far away in Dallas, my thoughts were here and I imagined the day, my daughter kept me updated, and I know that it was a busy, successful, happy day. One that Don shared in and had a big part in putting together.

There will be some changes coming up in our meeting schedule thru the summer, and  in the fall. We will go forward, and carry with us our special memories of what Don was to each of us. Sally Larsen, president 2015
