If you haven't been to Trona for their annual Gem-O-Rama you must go. Mark down October 11, and 12th on your calendars.
This is more than just a show this includes fieldtrips out onto the dry lake bed to grab evaporate minerals such as halite and hanksite.
The mining company in Trona opens up its operations and blasts crystals to the surface for collectors, and there is a schedule of guided tours for collecting. Look up Trona Gem-O-Rama 2014 on the web and you will find tour schedules. The Searles Lake Gem and Mineral Society hosts the two day show with several rooms of vendors, food, and displays of cases from the Searles Lake club members.
Trona is located 22 miles east of Ridgecrest in the Mojave desert. The town is celebrating its 100th year this year.
While you are there take a look at the company houses. Originally built and owned by the mining company they are now owned individually. The mine is also open for tours during Gem-O-Rama.
